Despite a tremendous level of news coverage, and market excitement, just 23% of US adults have ever tried ChatGPT, up from 18% in July 2023, according to a recent survey by the Pew Research Center. However, age plays a major role in whether someone has tried the service, with 43% of those aged 18 to 29 reporting they had, compared to 6% among those 65 or greater. Further, while educators remain concerned about the use of AI to cheat, only 19% of US teens that have tried ChatGPT say they use it for schoolwork, in a separate anonymous survey conducted by Pew. Comparatively, 31% of those aged 18-29 who have tried ChatGPT use it for work. These surveys suggest the adoption of AI remains in the early stages.
