There is a lot of hype around generative artificial intelligence (AI) with consultants and market watchers stumbling over each other about how many trillions of dollars generative AI can add to GDP. Bain approached it more practically by asking 94 executives from US healthcare providers what the use cases for generative AI are in the near term (next 12 months). The majority of use cases seem administrative tasks such as charge capture and reconciliation (41%) and structuring and analysis of patient date (39%). For instance, Doximity is using a ChatGPT tool that can draft preauthorization and appeal letter and Epic Systems is incorporating ChatGPT with electronic health records to draft response message to patients. In the short term generative AI seems fulfill the role of a quick assistant. Over the long term, executives are most interested in predictive analytics, clinical decision support and treatment recommendations.
