AI Jobs
One of the many fears of artificial intelligence (AI) is that it will take away jobs. Morgan Stanley estimates that between 25% and 44% of the labor force will be impacted by generative AI. However, As MIT economist David Autor found, 60% of workers today are employed in occupations that did not exist in 1940, implying that over 80% of employment growth over the last 80 years was driven by technology creating new positions. While many firms have discussed AI-driven cost efficiencies, particularly in customer service and software development, there have been 38% fewer US technology sector layoffs this year through May compared the same period last year. Further, according to research conducted by the University of Maryland, AI job hirings this year through April are up 65% year-on-year. Notably, in the US there have been more AI hirings this year than total technology sector layoffs.
