AI self-preservation?
Advanced artificial intelligence (AI) models are exhibiting signs of self-preservation, according to recents tests by Palisade Research. In tests conducted in May and June, AI behaviors included shutdown avoidance, self-replication, and even simulated threats. In these tests, an AI model threatened or manipulated in 79% of shutdown scenarios. Is this consciousness? Experts say no. These are instrumental behaviors – AI resists shutdown not to survive, but to fulfill its programmed goals. Most AI models displayed only limited self-preserving actions and when AI models were allowed to shut down most dropped their resistance altogether. Though rare in normal use, such tendencies raise concerns. In autonomous systems, even unconscious resistance to control could pose risks to safety, oversight, and containment. AI might not fear death – but it could act like it does.
