Artificial foundations
According to Stanford University’s 2024 Artificial Intelligence Index, last year the number of new significant foundational Large Language Model (LLM) releases more than doubled to 149. Despite calls by some within the industry to limit access to the technology to prevent misuse, the number of new open sourced LLMs released last year nearly tripled to 98. Separately, open source developer service Hugging Face recently announced that over the last two years, there have been 1.3 billion downloads of the various LLMs available on the platform. Notably, the most downloaded LLM over that period was Open AI’s GPT-2, the last version of their model made available before closing access with the launch of GPT-3 in 2022.
