Bringing home the bacon
19.04.23 | In the 1980s, a popular US television perfume advertisement designed to celebrate working women was set to a song with lyrics that began “I can bring the bacon, and fry it up in a pan”. Forty years later, according to a recent report from the Pew Research center, 45% of women in opposite-sex marriages earn as much, or more than their husbands versus 24% in 1982. Further, in 16% of opposite-sex marriages, the woman is the primary or sole income earner; a trend which plateaued in 2012. For married women with at least a bachelor’s degree, 19% are the primary or sole income earner.
