Electric assisted pedaling
The pandemic-driven surge in bicycle demand left the industry with excess inventory as biking interest normalized. However, the intention to purchase a new bicycle has risen according to a UBS Evidence Lab survey across the Netherlands, Germany, and the US. The data shows consistent interest in bicycles and a significant rise in e-bike purchase intentions, especially in the US, where multi-bike ownership is more common. In the US, 40% of potential buyers plan to purchase an e-bike within the next year (up from 30% in 2022), while in Germany it’s 29% (up from 21% in 2018). E-bikes, increasingly popular for commuting, attract European buyers seeking upgrades and US consumers expanding their collection. Notably, 37% of EU bicycle owners and 56% of US owners plan to switch to e-bikes, up from roughly 20% 2022. Key factors influencing e-bike purchases include design, value, power, and safety.
