In many movies and television shows set in the future, people’s homes are outfitted with a wide array of intelligent devices that help manage everything from lighting to daily schedules. Although many of the underlying technologies and smart-home products do currently exist, few consumers have them. According to a recent survey of UK residents conducted by Deloitte, while 70% of consumers have a smart connected television, and 37% have a smart voice-assisted speaker, far fewer have their lighting, security systems, or other devices controlled by a connected software system. Slow uptake has been attributed to an array of factors including software bugs, connectivity errors, and a lack of standards to facilitate compatibility.
