Korean chips
South Korea’s semiconductor industry—long a pillar of its economy—continues to evolve at the center of global technology trends. The recent dip in semiconductor industrial production volume has raised questions, but history shows that Korea’s chip sector often pauses before accelerating into a new growth phase. Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix are reallocating production lines toward High Bandwidth Memory (HBM), a core ingredient powering today’s AI servers. This strategic shift has temporarily lowered output, as reflected in January’s production data. With global appetite for memory surging and a large memory cycle unfolding, the Korean stock market has reacted and it’s up 105% in the last 12 months. Still, some overenthusiasm combined with rising energy prices (South Korea imports ¾ of it’s energy needs) led to a 19% decrease in the Korean stock market in the last three days.
