RenEUwable
Electricity production by renewable sources in the European Union is increasingly driven by wind and solar. In 2022, renewable sources generated 1.17 million gigawatt-hours of electricity, an increase of 28% since 2017. Wind and solar contributed the most to growth with wind up 45% and solar up 102%. Renewable electricity makes up 41% of total EU electricity production. The EU’s statistics bureau Eurostat excludes electricity produced from nuclear in its renewables figures, but nuclear electricity production was 0.61 million gigawatt-hours in 2022, down from 0.79 million gigawatt-hours in 2015. If nuclear was considered renewable, which is increasingly argued, the EU would get 62% of its electricity from renewable sources.
