Renewable energy dip
In Q1 this year, 43% of net electricity generated in the EU came from renewable energy sources, which includes solar, wind, hydropower and biofuels. That is a 4% decrease from the first quarter of last year when 47% of net electricity was generated by renewables. The decrease was caused by lower electricity production from wind and hydropower which was not offset by an increase in production from solar. The share of nuclear in electricity production was stable at 24%. Therefore, low-carbon sources account for 67% of EU electricity production and this share is likely to increase as many countries in the EU continue to support renewable energy. Lately, various countries have made plans for more nuclear power generation. At the same time, there are some concerns about electricity network stability after the recent blackout on the Iberian peninsula.
