The number of robotaxis in service around the world is expected to more than double in 2026 to 18,500, according to Bloomberg New Energy Finance (BNEF). While this figure pales in comparison to the global base of nearly 1.5 billion passenger vehicles, the technology is rapidly advancing. Providers like Waymo in the US and WeRide in China are expanding the number of markets they serve. In the US, Waymo reported the company had completed 450,000 paid trips per week in December, a roughly fourfold increase from the prior year.
