Shopping organic
US retail sales of certified organic products grew 5.2% in 2024, more than double the rate of grocery store sales which grew 1.8%. This suggests organic is gaining share in consumers’ wallets. About 90% of organic products sales are food. Therefore, it’s interesting to see how growth in organic products sales compares to consumer spending on food at home. Here the picture gets fuzzy, with spending on food at home outgrowing organic products between 2021 and 2023. Unfortunately the food at home spending data for 2024 is not available yet. Looking forward, the US Organic Trade Association projects a CAGR of 5% through 2029 for organic products sales, which means organic products are likely to outgrow non-organic products.
