Smart health
AI is already enhancing a broadening array of medical devices and processes. In 2023, the US FDA approved 223 AI-enabled medical devices, up from just six in 2015. For instance, Medtronic’s Guardian Connect is an AI-enhanced continuous glucose monitoring system for diabetes management. It uses machine learning to predict glucose trends and provide alerts for potential hypoglycemic or hyperglycemic events. AI is also being employed to boost medical staff productivity by transcribing consultations and streamlining record keeping. With more than USD 4.5 trillion spent annually on healthcare in the US alone, even marginal improvements derived from AI could have an enormous impact.
