Workers of the world on the move
The restrictions imposed during the Covid era are well known to have catalyzed a change in geographical work habits, with those able to work from home more likely to continue to do so after restrictions were lifted. The way in which people commute can be less than optimal in terms of efficiency and environmental impact. In Switzerland, a small, dense, and wealthy nation with an integrated public transportation system, considered to be amongst the world’s best, and whose population has the highest per-capita rail usage worldwide, the answer is surprising. Only 16% of the country’s 3.6 million commuters use rail as their main mode of transport for their commute, whilst half use a passenger car. The average time spent commuting is 30 minutes, showing the potential to use that time more productively.
