Nearly a quarter of children aged five to seven in the UK own a smartphone according to the country’s telecommunications authority, OFCOM’s annual study. While most social media apps have age requirements for account holders well above the this age range, the study found that 38% of this cohort use such services. Although 42% of UK parents report allowing children to use social media under supervision, 32% report allowing them to use the services unsupervised.
